AMA #12: Thoughts on Longevity Supplements (Resveratrol, NR, NMN, Etc.) & How to Improve Memory

Welcome to a preview of the 12th Ask Me Anything (AMA) episode, part of Huberman Lab Premium.

The Huberman Lab Premium subscription was launched for two main reasons. First, it was launched in order to raise support for the standard Huberman Lab podcast channel — which will continue to come out every Monday at zero-cost. Second, it was launched as a means to raise funds for important scientific research. A significant portion of proceeds from the Huberman Lab Premium subscription will fund human research (not animal models) selected by Dr. Huberman, with a dollar-for-dollar match from the Tiny Foundation.

If you're an existing Premium member, you can login to access the full episode.

If you're not a member, you can join Huberman Lab Premium to enjoy exclusive content, including monthly Ask Me Anything (AMA) episodes, AMA transcripts, podcast episode transcripts, early access to live events and help advance human scientific research.

Here are the key points from the portion of the episode transcript provided:

Resveratrol likely does not extend lifespan, though it may have some health benefits unrelated to longevity. Dr. Huberman takes grape seed extract for vascular function and blood flow effects, not longevity.

Increasing cellular NAD levels via supplements like NR and NMN or infusions may provide energy benefits, but there is currently no strong evidence they extend lifespan in humans. Dr. Huberman takes them for subjective energy effects, not longevity.

Dr. Huberman does not currently take metformin, berberine, or rapamycin with the goal of extending lifespan, as he feels the evidence does not support their use for that purpose yet. He acknowledges this could change based on future research.

Quality sleep, exercise, nutrition, social connection, stress modulation, and morning sunlight have much larger impacts on longevity than any current supplements. Those foundations should be addressed first before considering longevity supplements.
